Abstract:

With many small-scale farmers struggling to make their land profitable, some are turning to alternative agricultural products. Growing grapes for wine production is one option, but it requires just the right soil, topography and climate. A new, user-friendly, online tool, called VineyardMap, uses GIS mapping and analysis functions to help determine which land is suitable for growing high-quality grapes. VineyardMap employs the Pennsylvania Vineyard Site Assessment System (PVSAS), which assesses 13 environmental variables for specific sites throughout nine Pennsylvania counties.
